I Predict a Riot

2009 Leeds EDL, UAF March

Deep breath for this post; firstly I should explain that I absolutely detest watercolors as a medium and the last time I actually painted was in 1999. That attempt was of a Tall ship,  which I abandoned after about two weeks after getting extremely frustrated with the drying times with oil paints. The abandoned effort is here .

The reason I don’t like watercolors is I am quite fond of strong contrasts and bold colours in general  and i normally associate watercolours with being wishy washy, plus I don’t like the workflow.

However, I was inspired to attempt the picture on the left after reading about the war artist Matthew Cook and seeing his work on the BBC site.

His work is absolutely stunning and is a combination of ink and watercolour. I have never tried inks , but had some watercolours lying around and I took this photo from the Leeds UAF and EDL marches this weekend just gone.

I thought I would give it a go, if anything to just appreciate the level of skill of Matthew Cooks work and to reaffirm to myself, why I don’t like watercolours. I have posted it up , because I do like the idea of this for a picture and the composition of  my first attempt I think could work really well, so I may in the near future have a go at doing this in Acryllics , which I hope will give a far better result than my GCSE effort to the left.
